New Zealand @ Folk Alliance International 2019

February 13th 2019
Folk Alliance 2019 is on this week in Montréal, Canada and an excellent contingent of New Zealand artists are present to celebrate.

The world's largest gathering of the folk music industry and community is February 13-17, 2019, in Montréal, Canada. Returning to Canada in 2019, the Folk Alliance International (FAI) conference theme will explore the artistic process from inspiration to vocation.

The annual February conference (now in its 31st year) draws 2,800 artists and industry (agents, managers, publishers, labels, festival/venue presenters, promoters, media) dedicated to folk music. Delegates who attended the 2018 conference represented 35 countries.

This year will feature the following New Zealand acts making the trek to Montréal: Chris Dent & Pascal Roggen (of Albi & The Wolves), Graeme James, Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura and South For Winter.

Chris Dent & Pascal Roggen (of Albi & The Wolves)
Chris and Pascal make up two thirds of Albi & The Wolves, an outfit that prides themselves on pushing the limits of what such a small ground can do within the string band format. The band is renowned for their great stage presence, class sense of humour and the huge dynamic within their shows that they have evolved by touring New Zealand extensively. Their songs stand out on their own too as the band recently won the Best Folk Artist 2018 TUI at the New Zealand Music Awards for their debut album, One Eye Open.

Chris Dent & Pascal Roggen will be performing at the following showcases at FAI 2019:
Feb 13th at 11:00pm - FAI International (Room 408)

Graeme James
Graeme is a critically-acclaimed artist rooted in folk's rich storytelling and musical traditions. He furthers the lineage with an imaginative textural approach in which he carefully crafts multi-instrumental soundscapes. Graeme's dynamically layered compositions feature him playing violin, electric violin, guitar, bass, baritone ukulele, mandolin, harmonica, percussion, and beatboxing. He produces his own albums, and he faithfully recreates his textural tunes live in real time with a loop pedal. To date, Graeme has issued a pair of endearingly quirky cover albums; a self-released record of originals; and now, his first label released via Nettwerk in January 2019, The Long Way Home.
